Painting color-rich paintings that explore the connections between nature, humanity, places, memory, the visible world and the felt spiritual one.
Alika Kumar
Artist. World Citizen. Observer of Connection.
I am a contemporary visual artist whose work explores the connections between nature, humanity, culture, place, and the larger universe. Through luminous color, expressive texture, and imagery that moves between representation and abstraction, I paint what I experience as the deeper relationships beneath the visible world.
My work is shaped by a life lived across cultures, by travel, music, nature, spiritual inquiry, and a fascination with the stories that connect us as human beings. Whether I am painting a forest, an animal, a city reflection, a human figure, or the cosmos, I am ultimately exploring the same idea: we are part of something larger than ourselves.
That opening establishes the philosophy we have been developing across your Signature Collection without overwhelming the visitor.
My Story
I was born in India and have made Arizona my home for many years. My life has moved between seemingly different worlds - business and creativity, structure and intuition, analysis and imagination.
For much of my professional life, I worked in business consulting, economic development, international markets, and entrepreneurship. I earned a Master of International Management from Thunderbird School of Global Management and an MBA from Arizona State University. My professional career required discipline, analysis, observation, and an understanding of people and cultures, qualities that, perhaps unexpectedly, also found their way into my art.
Art remained a constant throughout those years. I painted late at night and on quiet weekends, continuing to study, experiment, exhibit, and develop my voice. Today, I have given my creative practice the space it has long asked for, allowing intuition, curiosity, and exploration to take a more central role in my life.
My Artistic Voice
Between the Seen and the Felt
My paintings often begin with something recognizable, often a bird, a figure, a forest, a building reflected in glass, or a remembered place. But I am rarely interested in simply recording what I see.
I use color, light, texture, pattern, and atmosphere to move beyond description and toward feeling.
I am particularly drawn to the space between opposites:
representation and abstraction
movement and stillness
earth and cosmos
individual identity and universal connection
the visible and the unseen
Color is central to that exploration. Blues, turquoise, greens, violets, warm corals, saffrons, and jewel tones recur throughout my work, creating an emotional rather than purely naturalistic world.
Ultimately, I want the viewer to pause—to experience a moment of wonder, serenity, recognition, or connection. My paintings are invitations to look outward more closely and, perhaps, inward as well.

The Journey of a Self-Taught Artist
I consider myself primarily a self-taught artist, but learning has been a continuous and important part of my practice. Over the years, I have studied painting, color, portraiture, abstraction, sculpture, and the professional side of an artist’s career through programs and workshops with the Virtual Art Academy, Milan Art Institute, Alain Picard, Marla Bagetta, Robert Burridge, Julie Gilbert Pollard, Richard Robinson, and others.
My exploration has also extended into sculpture, including figurative sculpture and fiber clay at Scottsdale Artists’ School and through independent workshops.
I believe artistic growth comes from remaining curious. Each new body of work is an opportunity to see differently, take risks, and refine the visual language that is becoming increasingly my own.
My work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Arizona and beyond, including Northern Arizona University’s College of Arts & Letters, the Arizona Capitol Museum, the Phoenix Airport Museum, the Herberger Theater Center, the Shemer Art Gallery, the Madison Center for the Arts, and Broadway Gallery in New York.

A Life Beyond the Studio
Before focusing more fully on my art practice, I spent many years in business consulting, international market strategy, economic development, and entrepreneurship. My work involved research, competitive intelligence, international markets, negotiation strategy, and helping businesses grow.
That experience continues to influence the way I see the world. It taught me to observe closely, remain curious about different cultures and perspectives, and recognize the interconnected systems in which we all live—ideas that now find a very different expression on canvas.
A World in Color
Painting, for me, is both exploration and conversation.
I hope my work offers a place to pause, to notice the personality of another living being, the extraordinary color hidden in an ordinary place, the memory contained within culture, or the quiet realization that we belong to a world far larger and more interconnected than ourselves.
If a painting creates a moment of joy, curiosity, stillness, or recognition in someone else, then the conversation has continued beyond my studio.
